How to Prepare for a Hike

Pick location, Pack, Inform Others, Enjoy!

Staring at the clock, you watch your Monday drift away. Your day is full of tasks and obligations that stress and tire you out. You think to yourself, “is this really how it has to be? Is there any way to get away from the obligations”. The answer is yes, and a hike could be the perfect solution. Getting out into the wilderness to enjoy nature can help disconnect you from the stresses of everyday life, but what if you have never gone on a hike before? What should I pack? Where should I go? All the answers are right here in, How to Prepare for a Hike. To create this step by step guide, I spoke with local hiking expert James Hoffman, who provided me with these 4 main steps.

Pick Location – “Choosing a location for your hike is always the first step” says Hoffman. Check out an online map to see what popular hiking locations are available near you. Make sure that the location is open, and the trails are safe for hiking, this information should be listed online.

Pack – “Always make sure you have more that you think you will need, but don’t bring so much that you break your back” jokes Hoffman. It’s important to bring the basics. Food, water, and a way to navigate. Hoffman ensures that packing correctly is an essential step for a successful hiking trip.

Inform Others – Hoffman says, “One of the most important things I’ve learned over the years is that you should never go on a hike without letting someone know. If you get lost or stuck, you need someone you trust to get the word out”. While hiking is fun, it can be dangerous. Never leave the house without first letting someone know, or bringing someone with. Keep a phone on you as well to contact assistance if needed.

Have Fun – “The whole point is to enjoy nature and have fun” Hoffman says. Take pictures! Smile! Have fun! You earned this break so make the most of it! Hoffman says that while it’s important to have fun, you should remember to leave no trace and pick up after yourself.

And there you go! You are all ready for your very first hike! Feel free to go out and explore nature while being safe, and courteous to nature.
